No. I wouldn't say that. Just say that (his name) is observing you today. Mentioning that you're a trainee makes some customers think that you can't do the job, and that's not true.

I used to train servers for Denny's. At first the trainer takes the table from start to finish and the trainee would observe. In that instance I would introduce myself to the table like this:

Hello, my name is Troy and I will be your server this evening. This is ________ and she is working with me tonight.

When it came time for the trainee to take the table we would simply reverse it.

Hello, my name is _________ and I will be taking care of you this evening. This is Troy and he is working with me tonight.

Don't mention anything about training. The guests get it. To do so comes across as tacky.

My advice is be the server you want to be. Labeling like trainee makes an excuse for not doing well. That way you hold yourself to a higher standard. If something goes wrong, tell the poeple thank you for your advice, I will do that better or something like that.

My servers always got great tips for mentioning that they had just started and were learning. And add in something like if there's anything you need, please let me know so I can give you the best service.

So yes, do say your name "I'm ____, I'll be your server tonight, can I get you drinks/appetizer to start out with?"

Go up to the table say hi my name is _______ I am brand new and ______ right here is going to be helping me out today. That works good that way they know why there is someone looking over your shoulder. And you are also being honest with the customer and they like that too.

I wouldn't recommend telling people off the bat that you're a newbie. If they're smart, they'll figure out that the dude behind you isn't just there for the heck of it. ;-)

hi welcom to_________. my name is____________, and i will be your server tonite. hand them their menus, and then say, can i start by getting you something to drink? give them their drinks and inform them you will give them a little time to make their food preference, and walk away. make sure not to be so pushy and seem too anxious. no one likes an overbearing server. informing them of your work status is not necessary. to make them comfortable about someone standing over your shoulders just inform them you will have someone help you serve today.good luck.
