it was nothing serious

No. It would be stupid to do so.

For a long distance relationship to work, there has to be trust involved. To have trust, inplies honesty on both parties. A guy who happens to be on probatioin, most likely isn't very honest or he wouldn't be there in the first place.

Look elsewhere.

If the guy is in another country, how do you know it was "nothing serious"? Because he said so? Do yourself a big favor and pay for a background check, which - depending on the level of investigation - will include his criminal record.

Assuming it "was nothing serious", then the biggest hurdle you have is the distance itself. In my experience, long distance relationships have little-to-no chance of surviving, unless there are regular visits, constant communication (daily calls, emails), and total honesty. You are facing an uphill challenge that, in most cases, turns out to be more hassle than it is worth.

But before you make any decisions - get that background check done. It is money well spent.

No way.

Let him get off of probation, and see if he doesn't do it again. Everyone thinks their stuff is "nothing serious." He may not even be honest about what he did in the first place.

There aren't men in your own country who aren't in jail/on probation?

I don't think long distance relationships are good regardless of the situation, but being that he was in jail. that doesn't speak well for him. And if you really don't know him and haven't spent a considerable amount of time with him, how can you trust him? No i really don't think that ldr's work for most people. but if he matters that much then good luck.

Is it a penpal type relationship? When would you actually see him? How do you know it wasn't serious, is that what he said? Have you ever met him? Wouldn't it be better to meet someone local that you could actually have fun and spend time with?

in his country? out on probation? are you out of your mind? that you are here is a testament that you know you should not. listen to your instincts. run very fast and very far and dont look back.

No. Find someone that can stay out of trouble unless you are looking for trouble.
