Just wondering if the midwife can have ultrasound equipment and do it, or must a doctor do it? Thanks in advance...

Doctors rarely do ultrasounds, and midwives rarely do it either. usually, that is done by an ultrasound tech. If a doc or a midwife is going to do it they have to be trained and certified in the same way a tech is.

If what you are asking is whether or not you'll have an ultrasound done if you choose a midwife for prenatal care, you'll have a choice. If you have a CNM (the type of midwife that delivers in a hospital) then you will be sent for an ultrasound. If you have a CMP (a midwife that delivers in the home), you can request that she referr you to a place for a medical ultrasound. Usually, you will be sent to your local hospital for an ultrasound and bloodwork, but a CMp won't insist on it - they frequently deliver babies in situations where the moms do not want prenatal testing in favor of a more "natural" pregnancy and birthing eperience. This choice is totally up to you.

Actually neither, only a sonographer with the initials RDMS (Registered Diagnostic medical Sonographer) should be performing the test. A midwife can have the equipment but the real question is who is doing the scan. The midwives can take a peek to see for the heartbeat or position, but anything done beyond that should be done by a qualified professional. A registered Ultrasound Tech or a MD who has had special Ultrasound training, like a perinatologist.

It seems like anyone can do an ultrasound anymore....remember Tom Cruise??? I would only go to a facility which specializes in ultrasound. That would be either an imaging department within a hospital or a free standing imaging facility. That way, you will know that a qualified, trained sonographer will perform your exam, and a trained, qualified radiologist will read your study. You wouldn't have a sonographer deliver your baby, and you shouldn't ask a midwife to perform an ultrasound. Medical personnel are trained in certain fields for a reason.......

Depends on the laws of the state and where they practice. My midwife did ultrasounds and practiced at a office.

I went to a midwife and she was not certified to do an ultrasound...the doc had to do it. I am not sure if that is a state thing or if it is a national thing...

Women who see a MW can have an ultrasound. The doc or the MW is very often not the one who performs the test...it's often done by an ultrasound technician instead.
