I am currently 9 weeks and 4 days. I will be having my first trimester screening in a week and a half. I am very nervous about this for some reason. Do they always come back and say your child has a chance of downs? Is an ultrasound performed?

First, congrats on your baby!! I found out I was pregnant at 9 weeks, and I was so scared, nervous and overwhelmed. I hope that you are doing well!!!!

I just had my first trimester screening about 4 weeks ago, at 11 weeks. It was actually so much fun!!! I know that sounds crazy. First you will get asked a bunch of question by the Genetic counselor. She will ask you things about your family background, so make sure you know what you have or dont have in your family. Second, you will sign a waiver basically saying all the above is true. Then...you will get your finger pricked. It is not even full blood drawn then. You will put your blood drops on Four/five circles on the paper that you signed. It seems silly but that is how they do the blood test. No big deal!!!

Now for the fun part. You will get a big ultrasound. As in, on the big screen, where you can see everything. Make sure you bring the father, becuase he will enjoy this too!!! You will watch him/her for about 15 to 20 minutes, while the technician is taking pictures, and doing measurements. If you are lucky like me, your little person may not cooperate, thus it took longer, may sound bad...but every minute longer is a minute you get to see him!!!!!! I was in there staring at my guy for 45 minutes. We actually saw that it was 80% it is a boy during this, although 9 weeks is probably way too soon for that. My little one was flipping and jumping and not staying still, so it took longer to get him in position for the measurements. They are looking at the length of the neck, the width of belly, head, and other parts. It is so much fun!!! I promise you will love every minute of it.

I dont know how old you are but I if you are younger, and have no family history, then you will be in the lowest percentile. Please dont worry, and ask the technician what she thinks...just to ease your mind. I asked her question like, what is that?? What is healthy??

Please relax...and enjoy this. It is a fun test becuase it allows you to see your baby for a long time!!! You will not get another big one until 20 weeks at your anatomy ultrasound, so enjoy!!!

Oh...and make her print you some pictures!!!!

Congrats!

I see OvaCue worke for you ;-) And, it worked for me too!

You always have a risk of downs with each pregnancy. Once you are over 30 they propegate that even further. But, don't worry about it, it's normal.

My cousin had her last two over thirty.

Do some research on the testing. You'll quickly find the tests aren't very reliable. However, due to malpractice issues the doctor has to perform them.

Yes, an ultrasound will probably be performed. They are looking for two things

1. Nuchulal fold (under the neck) they measure the thickness.
2. The nose structure - they are looking for the bone in the middle of the nose (can't remember the name of it.

Also, they'll probably measure the legs and arms.

But, nothing is conclusive until after the baby is born.

I had my doctor withold all test results. I didn't want to know and it didn't matter either way. My first doctor told me there was a problem with the femur (leg bone measurments). And, they were two weeks off. My new doctor said nothing to worry about. Sure enough my son was born healthy!!

It's really not a big deal. They just draw some blood. Chances are, if your family doesn't have a history of downs, your baby won't. The test results, if they're normal, are just given to you by your doctor. I believe you can request for them to call you when the results come in. Usually, your doctor won't perform an ultrasound until 13 weeks. Then you get to take home those cute lil pictures!

That seems a little early for the blood work, I thought they had to do it between 15-19 weeks you should be at a low risk for downs with your age. Keep in mind that the blood work is often unreliable if it is done to soon or to late it will give you inadequate results.

Everyone has a risk of downs with each pregnancy. The tests give you a idea of whether your chances are high or low. The only true way is to have a amniocentisis test.

Don't over worry yourself sick. Relax and enjoy your pregnancy. List your questions on paper so you know what to ask your doctor after you got the result. Staying healthy and being happy is the best thing you can do for your child. He or she benefits from it more than you would imagine. Congratulation, by the way. :)
