He acted the part of a rather soft inmate who got pushed around a bit but he was working on an idea to steal a great deal of money from a wealthy guy. He was only acting being very soft to throw off any susption of him having enough guts to carry out a big robbery on a house. While inside he befriended a younger guy he did the robbery with him and turned out could have been his son.
