Hello, a police offer recently came to my door and dropped off a notice that I was being sued for $10,000 for my dad's company that previously went out of business. They were looking for both me and my dad, at the time that he put my name under the company I was only 18. I vaguely remember when I was 18 being worried about this, but he still did it without my permission. Now I am 24. He says he will take care of the 10,000, but I am worred there might be additional lawsuits after this. What can I do, I do not want to turn my dad in for fraud. I just finally saved up $4000 to get out of my debts. Should I be worried?

If you were listed as an officer or director of the company "in name only", I doubt you have any personal liability as you had no responsibilities, authority or duties and you were not being compensated. You made no decisions, signed no contracts, did not file or sign any tax returns, etc. It should be fairly easy to have yourself removed as a defendant.

You may have also been served because you are listed as the registered agent.

It really has nothing to do with fraud. You had the ability to "resign" and remove your name at any time by filing the appropriate paperwork with the division of corporations for your state. If you suspected that you were an officer of a corporation against your will, you could have done a search and found out for certain.

Try seeking legal counseling. Keep in mind your name is on that legal document. Just make sure ur dad will take care of it. If not ur screwed.

Yes you should. Try seeking legal counseling. You may get some free help, or you may pay not so much. Bottom line is that your name was on it, and you were 18 (adult).
