First of all, there never was a V-6 in a 1968 camaro. It was a straight 6 cylinder engine. As far as how big an engine can you put in this vehicle? Anything from a small block V-8 like a 350 cubic inch to a gas guzzling 572 cubic inch big block monster! Keep in mind that you are also going to have to beef-up the front suspension to handle the extra weight of the larger engine and change the rear end to something that will handle the extra horse power. The bottom line is how much are you willing to spend? The 1968 camaro happens to be one of my alltime favorite cars also. Good luck with your project and take your time to do it right.

Ok, if you want something cookie cutter common that everyone has, put a 350 in it. A big block would be cool if you want a drag car, but handling and mileage will suffer! I personally would try to find a 327, they came originally in your car, ran sweet, and will still get 20mpg when you are just cruising! I have both a 69 Firebird and a 62 Impala wagon, both with 327s, mainly stock, both get well over 20mpg just cruising, but run hard when ya put the hammer down! A 350 after 1970 is lucky to get 13mpg at best! A 327/300hp with a turbo 400 is what I have in the bird, and it gets with the picture! The wagon has a 69 Hi-Torque truck engine it, had small heads and a torquey cam from the factory, but is basically a vette engine, so add some 202 heads and an intake and carb, you have lots of HP. Your car sounds just like mine, I had to put floor pans in it, new rear frame rails and trunk, new springs, a whole new front end, done with poly bushings! Rear quarters and some paint, she aint a show car , but a go car! Good luck with your project, take your time, do as much of it yourself as possible, just throw a fuel cell up in the trunk for gas, and do the interior like ya want- I went hot-rod style, all aluminum panels, no back seat and racing seats in the front! That way you can throw some big-*** speakers where the back seat used to be! Make it how you want it, make it yours, do what you want to do to it!

Any Chevy engine will fit in the engine compartment. However since you had a six cylinder you need to put in heavier shocks and springs all around. You need to change engine mounts too. Some of the big blocks will need modified headers to fit but many aftermarket companies make them. You will also probably need to beef up the driveshaft and rearend. Another thing is was it a three on the tree then you will have mods on the steering column. Oh yeh and brakes need to be beefed up. Big job but if the car is in good shape probably worth it.

You can put anything in a '68...they used to come with 350's, 396's, 427's, 454's...
But if you're asking such a question, I would suspect that you are not quite sure what you're doing around cars...anyone who is going to build a hot rod should know what they're doing around cars...

it just depends on how much work you wanna do and how well you know what your doing.
my buddy used to work for the airforce and "comendeered" a jet engine and thats whats under the hood of his camaro....the down side of that was he had to totaly rebuild the front end so the car would hold the weight.
