painting etc;is it some connection to the brain i had abrother who did it and now i see my grand-nephew doing the same

As Starlight said, "It's concentration" I bet you did the same as a child, but don't remember doing it. The same goes for a child they don't realise that they are doing this.

It aids consentration and can then become a habit. When I was a driving instructor I noticed several pupils doing it on hill starts.

I think it's just a way of maintaining concentration and those who do so are usually unaware of this action unless if someone points this out.

My brother still does it, watching him build a flat pack item cracks me up. You can see he is totally focused on what hes doing, and his tongue just starts poking out.

all my kids do it - as did I when I was growing up. My eldest is now 15 and he doesn't do it anymore.

It seems to help them concentrate...both my kids do it.
