In a 4-3 alignment (4 linemen and 3 linebackers) the defensive tackles are the two inside linemen (outside are the Defensive Ends). In a 3-4 alignment, there is only one defensive tackle, who is commonly called the nose tackle, who lines up over the center.

It is a position that is opposite of the offensive lineman.
If there are 3 men on the defensive line they are listed from left to right
1) Defensive tackle (left)
2) Nose tackle (plays opposite the Center)
3) Defensive tackle (right)

well he plays on the defense and his job is to tackle people i dont like football i am sure someone wil give you a very erudite answer involving defensive schemes and blitzing and stunting and audibles and pulling guards and run blocking i only have am radion in my car so alot of time the only entertainment while i am driving is listening to sprts talk good luck
