You hit the problem right on the head. A good answer would be a mix of both views if the public is totally against you you should follow the public unless the public wants to ignore or over ride the constitution. If the public doesn't care or is evenly split then the politicians personal convictions should win out. That would solve the problem don't you think?

Politicians are not driven by polling -- unless it's internal polling done for them by a company hired by them or - for example - an organization the politico is allied with. And even then, that may not sway the vote/opinion. The media will try to shape public opinion through polling....by the way questions are asked. It is a function of the media I detest....and I did write for several newspapers. I always felt our role was to report, not construct the news.

"Polls" are generally biased and inaccurate.
However, listening to the will of the people is something completely different. Politicians need to get out and talk to their constituents, but also, constituents need to let their leaders know where they stand on issues. If you don't tell your leaders, they won't know how to represent you.
That is your civic duty, just like voting.

We are a representative democracy. We elect leaders to make decisions based on their best judgement. The alternative would be to hold national referenda on everything. Polls can be (& often have been) wrong.

They should listen to us, but as with anything else they have to use common sense.
If the majority of the people said that nuking Korea would be a good thing, but the minority knows that it would be detrimental to not only Korea but the entire world, they should say no.

Would you want you banker making decisions without your approval? Your mechanic making decisions without your knowledge? We have to get back to the basics of ACCOUNTABILITY not what the "person" making the decision thinks is right for others. Government should be for the people by the people...PERIOD!

The poll people lie, so how do they know it is what we want unless they come out here and ask us or better yet folks e-mail your elected officials every time an issue is important to you let them know without a doubt what you want. then when they ignore us we will know who they are working for.
