I agree...vote for the best person...the party is a secondary consideration.

I think Republicans used to be a more fiscally conservative party, but that's pretty much all over, if you look at all the budget turkeys they voted for, passed, and Bush chose not to veto, and then our huge trillion dollar deficit of course. So from what I've observed Republicans are no longer fiscally conservative, but just socially conservative, i.e. usually do not want abortion and gay marriage, however, some of that I think is mostly just rhetoric, because there are several Republicans that are homosexuals, so I think it is weird for example there are homosexual Republicans talking against gay marriage, just think that is strange. To me that would be like heterosexuals talking against marriage, why would you do that? I guess just to get elected...So, my point, being, there are less distinctions between the parties, it seems to me, and the Democrats I've seen, look a lot more like Republicans, more conservative to me, I guess partially because they've had to work with Republicans as the minority party these last years...

I would look at how the candidate feels about the environment, this to me is a key issue. The war is clearly a huge issue, if nothing else, it impacts our country in many ways: it's devastating to our country's financial budget; it hampers us from defending our country from any other military problems (say North Korea and Iran), and it does hurt us diplomatically abroad.

I think you do need to look at the candidates and do some research before you vote. One local candidate in our town was frustrated because the local State Attorney has been running as Democrat for years, although he's clearly been a hard-core Republican, and everyone always votes Democrat in our town. So this Democrat decided to run as Republican although he is actually a Democrat. If anyone read up about him, they would see that he was actually the only Democrat choice, but again the Republican won, because everyone just goes down the ballot and darkens the Democrat choice without doing any research on the candidates.

I wish I could do that. I don't like voting party. However I strongly feel that our republican dominated government has not served us well and there needs to be accountability and over site back in congress. The only way to achieve that goal is to vote for the democratic party.

Because leaders don't lead by themselves, but they have to work with others, such as a Congress or Legislature, to get things passed. Therefore, you want the person to have the certain "characteristic values" of either a Republican or Democrat that he or she will always try to sway the other people to go for. For example, if a Democratic Congress asks a Republican President to endorse something that Republicans don't like, he/she's not going to endorse it. Visa-versa.

Is there really another choice? Other democracies have more parties, regulated by laws, not by big money or lobbyists. People have much more choices and can canalize their ideas or wishes more better. It's time to have a real democracy in the US.

Who else do you think we should vote for? IMHO a vote for a fringe party candidate is the same as not voting.
