It's pnuemonia. When the hip is broken they have to lie still and wait for it to heal. Lying around lets fluid collect in their lungs, then they get pnuemonia and die. That's what happened to my grandfather.
More rarely, a severe break can cause a blood clot to form near the break that can come loose and cause a stroke - which happened to a friend's father.

I saw a t.v. program a while ago about this. It has to do with not getting up and moving around soon enough so your blood clots. Similar to that embedded reporter during the invasion of Iraq that died because he stayed in the same position too long.It happens on long airplane flights as well. I'm no Dr. but that was one reason that was explained. Just read the above answers and maybe I;m thinking of something diffrent

Usually fracture nec frmur(what you are asking) in old age is beginning of end. Bones are brittle. The whole system is at fag end and so does not respond properly to body calls. Then many times it is risky to go for Surgery due to old age problems.Last is the person who should take decision(usually a close relative) is undecided about what to do!

Usually because they already have chronic medical problems like heart disease or diabetes. Add to that, if they are unable to fully participate in physical therapy and are bedbound it leads to complications such as pneumonia or a blood clot.
