The cheapest, easiest thing to do is pay the few dollars a month more for a second telephone line and use that second phone line for your internet connection.

If you have call waiting you can be bumped off the internet when someone tries to call. You can temporarily disable call waiting by dialing one of the following three codes: *70, 70# or 1170 (depends on where you live)
Put the code in and then put a comma after the code to make the modem pause for a dial tone.

It should look like this:
*70 , ###-####

you can change the type of internet you use. That only happens when you use dial-up. I would recommend switching to DSL. It is more expensive but it is so much faster and it doesn't kick you offline when the phone rings!

you need to disable the call waiting by dialing *70 before you dial the number to access the internet. It will only be temporary for your dial up until you disconnect from the internet.
