Don't get drug down to their level. You can beat the with a simple explanation of the truth, and then end the conversation. If the "idiot wants to pursue the argument, just plainly and kindly say
"I can understand your view point, for certainly you have the expertise, but I too have the knowledge of this subject, and feel that your argument is outdated and without foundation to stand. So, lets just leave it at we both agree to dis-agree." And change the subject or walk away.

I try not to argue with idiots, but unfortunately many sit in the government and its administrative offices, and then yes, the experience can be as you describe.
Napoleon said: "I am not scared of those evil, it is the stupid that I fear". Napoleon was a very smart chap.
If you put a stupid person into power, you generate a recipe for disaster. Surely, we all can see that.
Do not let people like that drag you down too much, they are not worth it!

Yes it is true this is the modus operandi of the typical idiot. Having experienced this a number of times I now find myself cutting them off early in the conversation by changing or ending the discussion before we get to the part where I would be kicking myself for being tricked into their stupid mad little games.

The only effective way to deal with stupid and ignorant people is to attack them with ignorance and stupidity -- that's all they understand.
