Why when being executed by hanging were women hung whist seated in a chair?

It was very common for both men and women to be executed while seated on a horse or in a cart. Particularly in a cart, a number of executions can be performed at once, with everyone's noose over the scaffold at the same time and then being yanked out as the carts moved. This was not usually enough to kill someone right away like dropping someone from a height in a noose does, so friends of the executed sometimes would pull on a condemned person's legs to strangle them faster. I think it was a modesty thing, let them die with a bit of dignity The last woman that was hanged in England was Ruth Ellis on 13 July 1955 for shooting her boyfriend in a fit of jealousy....so beware boys !!!!!

Probably for a similar reason as found in countries where stoning still takes place: a male is buried up to his waist whereas a female is buried up to the neck so the stones don't hit her breasts - that is considered indecent! Unbelievable.

I do know, however, that women were crucified facing the cross for modesty.

well,,as women back then were worked like dogs i guess it is so they at least when the end came the husband could tell them to,,"put your feet up love" cant be fairer than that can you,,lol

I don't know but could it have been to protect their modesty? so people couldn't see up their skirts while being hanged?
