I would like to find a photo of the boat PT358. The boat he served on in WWII I don't know much else about it but I would love to find a photo before Christmas. Links appreciated!

You can call or write to the National Archives and request the boat's history as well as its photograph, if they have one.

It will cost you money, but not that much.

You can also obtain a crew list for the years in question and maybe a log copy from the boat.

They were usually parts of squadrons (a group of boats), so you might have to settle for a "diary" of the squadron and a history of the squadron. If you don't ask, you will not get it.

National Archives is in College Park, Maryland.

If they don't have it, then you have to call the Department of the Navy, Naval History, and attempt to get the information that way.

However, if this is for Christmas, you probably will not get it in time.

You might also want to go on www.abebooks.com and under "description" type in "PT358", complete with quotation marks, and see if anything pops up. It that does not happen, just put in PT boats and probably a zillion books will appear.

There is a piece of art on the Naval Historical Center website that you need to see.

Here's an idea for you, get him a model. First, I found the ship on the Colton Company website list. It shows that your grandfather's boat was an 80 footer that was delivered by Electro Launch (ELCO) to the Navy in June, 1943, and that the Navy sold it in 1946. At Steelnavy.com you can get a PT-boat kit for the earlier 77-foot boat. Perhaps you can contact them for the kit for the 80-foot boat and build him a model.
