I'm sure there are other things most people would like to see happen to him, but this is a good start...or a good end.

I think Saddam is a great example of a really heartless dictator. I also happen to believe that hanging him would be one of the biggest mistakes we could make. As long as he is alive we will have to put up with 'free Saddam' movements. Once he is executed he will become a martyr to those opposing our influence or the new regimes rule in Iraq. You have different options available with a free Saddam movement. Once he's executed there is nothing else that can be done with him. A martyr is a powerful thing. Just look at history.

No, hanging Saddam is not a good idea. A martyr is far more dangerous than a hero/villian in prision.

Alex:you always list Ph. D. as the basis for your thoughts, then you say "without the hope of their leader coming back, with the symbol of violent rule hanging from the rope and the like, the insurgency will surely disintegrate."

OK, if you truely have a Ph. D., use it, analyze the situation. This nation was held together by him. Tyrant, yes, evil, perhaps, but he is loved by as many as hate him, and killing him will NOT disintegrate their resolve to get rid of us. It will enhance it. Martyrdom is huge in fanatical islam. If they hang him, we will will surely hold the blame, earned or not. That will cause an exponential increase in violence towards our troops.

See things from outside the GOP box! The world is not black and white, it is shades of grey, colors, light and dark. In other words, the world is complex, and simple solutions don't often work!

Saddam is irrelevant his hanging will mean nothing. it will mean even less as this court will be seen as a kangaroo court with a predetermined outcome. It would have been better if he had been tried in the Hague where all the other war crime suspects are tried. The only down side to the Hague is there is no death penalty only life in prison.

I think that he is getting off extremely easy. If we were to treat him like he has treated so many others, we would probably crucify him in the real sense of the word. So, I am definately okay with this, because he really deserves more than what he's getting.

Its more problem for Iraq but thats not gonna change anything. I think hanging him is not right, hes a military man shoot him is better. After all in hes quarter century rule he has killed much less that Mr. Bush did in 3 years.

I think they should wait and do it during the halftime show during the Superbowl. It will have an impact on the Ba'thist left in the country. As it will take away the rallying figure of their part of the struggle. Ba'thist are pragmatic and will see that they need to come together with Kurds to protect themselves against the ravages of the Shia and their supporters in the east (Iran). It will eventually have a stabilizing effect on the balance of power in the region, as it goes forward with out US occupation and support for the Independent government now in power in Iraq.

Copied from my letter to the NY Post editors:

Saddam’s upcoming date to be swinging from the gallows just goes to show what happens when military dictators fall out of favor with the Superpower who installed them. Sure, we brought him into power in the 1970's. True, we chose Iraq over Iran and kept Saddam in power throughout the Iran-Iraq War and allowed him to stay even after bullying Kuwait. Heck, it was easier than admitting our faux pas in getting caught attempting to influence/create Iran's government. Granted, we US citizens tend to see a trial with “secret” witnesses, evidence and procedures; one in which defense attorneys are murdered; in which one Judge openly proclaimed his disdain for the defendant as a tad bit unfair and biased, but Saddam wasn't tried in America. He was tried in the new democracy-laden Iraq, in which the time for secret evidence, witnesses and trials with arbitrary rules went out with...well...their dictator Saddam Hussein. Er...at least HIS will be the last trial with secret evidence, witnesses, and dead defense attorneys. Um, after his final trial, with said rules in place. Since we’ve had the first free elections, installed a pseudo-representative government and Saddam’s guilty, can my brothers please come home now?

I think he probably deserves to be hanged but I also think it will never happen. His lawyers will appeal his case until Saddam dies a natural death from old age.

Already, today, Prime Minister Blair has come out against hanging Saddam and other world leaders who do not believe in capital punishment will also voice their opinions.

They expected riots when they sentenced him and that didn't happen. So, maybe not. I guess it will all play out when the time comes, because Saddam deserves to be hung after all of the innocent men and women he slaughtered.

I think they're anger is from the fact that they think of us as Inifidels... not because were going to kill Saddam.
