This is a very complex situation. Yes Saddam is an evil person, responsible for the murder of thousands of people and probably deserves to die for it. However, if this is so then surely those who created cover stories for him when he was murdering ought to be in the dock also. Those governments who sold him the technology to create such chemical weapons should also be in the dock being tried for the same murders!
Saddam murdered Iraqi Kurds in north west Iraq (The same Kurds are being murdered by Turkey even now and not a word from the US etc. I wonder why?) using chemical weapons. When this was becoming public the USA tried to cover this by stating that it was in fact Iran who carried out this attack. So should the US not be in the dock being tried for these murders. It seems to me that when there are individuals serving the interests of the world's bigger powers they can do what they want. This can clearly be seen in the relationship between Saddam and the US when they were buddies. But when the relationship broke down Saddam became this massive threat with (non existent) WMD and a treat to the world.
So yes Saddam is evil and did evil things, but so did those who armed and let him carry out his evil!

It's a very good question. Where do you draw the line? If a country has the death sentence for crimes and the President does not sign a pardon is he also responsible for that death. When you go to war are you responsible for the deaths of civilians and soldiers on both sides?
I don't actually think we should hang all politicians but it might be nice if they gave some thought of consequences from their actions/decisions.

Saddam was never a politician. He is merely a poor misunderstood mentally inferior raving despot. His day is nearly over. Let us try to find a far more purposeful way to spend our time. His family is gone as are most of his goons so lets try to find a common cure for his country's ailments instead of trying to find another person to blame for everything.

Controversial I know, but I believe that only the defeated in any armed conflict are guilty of war crimes. Discuss.

I think we should hang them if there country's laws allow for it. Then again, we do have an International Court that could serve it's own justice. WOW! What a concept!

When Louis XIII, under the advice of Richleau, crushed the protestant rebels army and captured the leader, he tried him, found him guilty of treason, and exiled him, showing incredible mercy on his part. This led the remaining protestant rebels to become fanatically patriotic.
Sometimes mercy is the better alternative.

If your talking about Saddam is it not because Iraq has the death penalty already, Isn't that why they wanted him tried there.
Leaders of other countries who commit crimes like this probably dont have the death penalty

Its not us hanging anyone.
Its an Iraqi court and the control of the elected Iraqi government.
while I am sure we have a view, its up to them what they do with him.

What's your point? To whom are you referring when you say you can think of a few politicians who are just as responsible for as many civilian deaths.
