They do that, and probably get nice pensions after their retirements. Or they were rich from the start...look at Bush...the dad...oil tycoon.

They do receive retirement benefits for their presidency, and I'm sure some may get benefits for also holding other office such as Congressional seats. (not 100% on that) Most make money giving speeches, writing books, etc. I'd say that most had a substantial financial background before they took the White House, so I'm sure money really isn't that big of an issue. Most politicians are successful at business, law, medicine, etc before they go into politics.
As for "feeling useful"...Carter does to Habitat. I don't hear too much about what others do. I'm sure 4+ years in the White House puts a lot of stress on your life..I'm sure some like to kick back for awhile and raise money for their Presidential Library.

The speaking fee's they get are enormous. BJ Clinton earned more in a week giving speeches after leaving office then he did as President for 8 years. The closer they are to having served the more they get so they hit the trail pretty quick. Millions of dollars paid just for a speech or two.

They earn alot of money while in office and in investments. And they give speeches and write books, and do other politic based things. Politic groups use them as spokes people to push their topics their congress and to also help get their candidate into office.
The presidential office earns alot of money while in office in the hopes that they will not need to earn much more money or need to get a job at mcdonalds once they are done.
But as you have seen many of past presidents have come from wealthy families.
Bush, Kennedy, even older presidents like Jefferson and Lincoln had private wealth before office so after office was not much of an issue.

Most former Presidents were wealthy before they came into office. G. Bush senior, B. Clinton etc. They get a pension from serving in the white house. They also get secret service protection for the rest of their lives. They also make money off of speaking engagements and book deals etc. They sure aren't hurting.

Most of the American Presidents are wealthy when they vie for Presidency, in fact that was one of President Reagans directives to Americans, that 'one should be personaly wealthy if he wants to run for presidency'. He was worth around 150 mn dollars with a 5000 hectare Ranch when he decided to become the president. He took only $1 as pay during his tenure.
What they usually do after their tenure is write books, give speeches, go as consultants, sit on committees or give advises for which they get paid.
President Carter was a Ranch owner when he became President. President Busch Sr. was a millionaire through Oil trade when he decided to run for Presidency. So most of them were personally wealthy falling into President Reagans directives to future American Presidents. Busch Jr. was the co-owner of Huston Astros a baseball team and he owns a Ranch and he was in Oil trade when he decided to run for Presidency as well. So that makes up the mental make up of American Presidents.

Besides drawing a pension from the US Gov. presidents sometimes receive honorariums from speeches they give and royalties from books they write.
Former President Jimmy Carter gives much of his time volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and he promotes human rights.

i know that some former presidents like Clinton, they speak at public events, colleges things of that nature, and get paid very well. Also you have to put in accoun that the presidents are already loaded with cash before the presidencey!

With congressmen and representatives they usually turn to lobbying because they already have the connections for it. Presidents are tougher to gauge because there are so few living to say they usually do this or that. Not that any of it matters because once they have served they all (presidents, congress, house reps) get to draw from a retirement fund paid for by the taxpayers for the rest of their lives even if they are convicted of crimes.

I think they get a government pension. And , like you said, they get money for speeches.
Also writing books, sitting on corporate board of directors, etc...
