I live in the east (pa). I grew up hating rap and hip hop, even though it was so popular in high school. I was more into "alternative" music and new wave (the cure, the smiths, lots of 80s bands). About five or six years ago, I started to take Prozac for depression and I started to like hip hop. I wouldn't say I'm a diehard fan or anything. But I don't mind the hip hop stuff they play on the radio and I really like eminem. He speaks to my angry side. Demos: white, 31

23, white, midwest. Grew up listening to soft rock and pop music

I like hip hop. Not so much into rap. I like the fact that hip hop has a message, usually some kind of statement about races or the government or something. Or just how the world is and how it needs to change. Rap just seems to be about bodies, sex, girls, money. Stupid crap. There is something different about hip hop that makes me like it over rap. I don't know if it has singing or something, a melody in the background, I even like the rhythm and beats better. Plus, I think that hip hop samples a lot of good spirituals and old songs.

I'm mixed black and white....I'm 23 and I live in Atlanta GA....
I used to like rap and hip hop, but as I've gotten a little older, I've started to listening to music for the message or lyrics. It seems rappers are lazy lyrically and the message is cliche. This is, of course, not true for all, but the majority I have heard. Hip hop is following rap in many of these same trends but I do not think it has reached such a low point yet.

black ,eastcoast (NJ)

I actually grew up listening to an array of music :r&b hip hop, reggae, alternative, not so much rap. I choose not to listen to rap due to the content of the lyrics. I listen to music that has substance and to artists that have real talent. Many rap artists sound the same to me. The lyrics are similar and their videos are very similar in which they degrade women and boast about cars, jewerly and money. Hip Hop on the other hand has a somewhat of a story line and leaves you thinking (hip hop focuses on empowerment of black people, while rap perpetuates a rather barbaric image of black people that have no class.

I like some. If it is melodic, has an interesting hook, or has something else unique going on musically, I like it. I tend to like singing vocals or singing + talking instead of just talking the whole time.

If it's too repetitive, out of tune, uses only 2 or 3 different notes, has off-time drum beats (doesn't rhythmically make sense to me), I don't like it.

Lyrics have something to do with it, but it's mostly the music that makes or breaks a song.

Demographics: 30 y.o. WF, grew up in Western US, grew up listening to my parents' music (Dylan, Rolling stones, etc), 80's music, and playing several instruments.

33. Black/white/native mixed. Canada. I grew up listening to everything (from classic to trash metal), but mostly Latin music (not because I liked it), and rock (which I have always preferred!)
I do not like rap and hip hop, since I find the 'rhythm' and voices disturbing, rude and bad tasting. I like many of their lyrics, though, because it's a smart way to express their feelings.

15, Caucasian, north. I grew up listening to older rock(led zeppelin, ramones, Dead Kennedy's) and 90's rock(nirvana, tool, cake, red hot chili peppers) I cannot stand hip-hop. The lyrics have no meaning for me. The beat gets to me. its just...no. I now listen to alternative and screamo( rise against, afi, underoath, the used, three days grace, etc) I still adore the stuff i grew up with.

I know and am fond of a lot of blacks, going back to the 40's I will not look and listen to people shaking their fingers and chiding about how bad they are and how bad they have life. everyone has a hard time in life, as into a life some rain must fall, and they show anger continuosly. No I will not listen to it!
