Remember that you pay in advance too. See if you've got a credit and how long it will last, then cancel your DD and let them bill you each quarter. Just budget some money aside each month to cover expected use.

From the details you give, I would estimate you use 160 litres a day on baths, 60 litres a day on showers, you don't say how often you do laundry so I guess 20 litres a day, toilet flushing for two people about 64 litres a day.
As you are apparently using an average of 472 litres a day, that leaves 168 litres for washing up, other cleaning, watering plants, cooking, and probably leaving tap on while you clean your teeth.
I have had a meter for over 4 years my meter reading today is 64 (64,000 litres) That is all I have used since having the meter installed.
You must be absolutely filthy if you need to have two baths a day, I keep clean by washing my entire body with shower gel, and a basin full of water, about 8 litres a day.
I love having a bath, I have one whenever I have run out of water to flush the toilet with.
The bath water, the washing up water, the laundry water, the water I clean with, or wash myself with, is all re-used to flush the toilet.
I wouldn't expect you, or anyone else to go as far as that, but if you live in the south of England, where there is a shortage of water, you need to cut the amount you use, for everything except food and the preparation of it.
If as someone else suggested you turn all taps off, wait a while for any tanks which are filling up, to stop filling, and look at the meter to see if it is taking in water, you will be able to see if there is a leak. But from what you stated, I don't think there is a leak, you can save yourselves a lot of money by cutting the amount of water you use.

I think the water co. does this to people all the time!! My bills were running around $30 then all of a sudden I got a bill for over $130. They said I must have had a leak or something. I had to pay it. Never got another bill like it ever. That was 20 some years ago. I didn't have a leak!! They did the same thing to my Dad once. I think it's their way of raking in extra money and what can we do about it!!??? I think it's a big rip off!!!

Well I'm sure you've taken into consideration the bigger water users that may not seem as obvious like ice makers, lawn sprinklers, and washing the car. If it's a leak around your house I would suggest looking for really green spots in the yard, this would suggest extra helping the lawn grow in spots where a leak might have happened. I would try using some water saving methods for a billing cycle and seeing if that helps, if it's just as bad if not worse then yes I would have more testing done and find the problem.

I guess you are in the UK. I know here in the states when we have a problem with being overcharged, we call the company and they have to come out and check. Try reading your meter on a daily basis. Many times they do not even read the meters, they just make an estimate. It is not fair and you can protest. If there is a leak, they are supposed to fix the leak.
Good luck.

I not sure how your water meter work, but, in the USA it have a little thing you can see spinning when the water is on in the house. Turn off everything and go watch to see if it is moving. If, it moves there is a leak in or under your house.

Have you got a meter? If not ask for one.Besides a bath uses a lot more water than a shower, dont leave the tap running while brushing your teeth..... little things like that save water (and try to have more showers than bath),

Have you disputed the bill with the water company? If so, they should/might be able to send out someone to check for a leak.

Maybe there is a leak in the underground pipes. It sounds like it is on your size of the meter though.

Make sure all of your water faucets are turned off. Then check to see if your meter is moving. If it is, you have a leak.
