dont change your breathing pattern... just sit quietly & follow & pay attention to your breath.
if you have any thoughts, just let them go (you'll have them!) and tell yourself "thinking" and come back to the breath. you can use a mantra on each inhale & exhale, like om or something else if you like.

Meditation is simply focused thought. That is it. It is great to spend hours with lovely music in the background, but very few of us have that kind of time.

I would recommend simple breathing. Start with breathing in to the count of 4, hold in for 4, and exhale for 8. You can do this for four cycles in about one minute.

There are a lot of great exercises in the book 'Voluntary Controls' by Jack Schwarz. I also learned a LOT of great and simple exercises from a lady named Heidi Wright. She is actually an animal communicator, but is very down to earth and practical. You can find her by doing an internet search. She is also featured in a new book by Amelia Kinkade.

Dr. Wayne Dyer also has a great book called 'Getting in the Gap' which includes a meditation CD with the book. The meditation on the CD and in the book is really simple, and really effective.

Another great source is Tai-Chi, Yoga, or Martial arts.

sit in a calm relaxed area ( it doen't mater if it is inside/outside just wherever calms you). close your eyes and breath. if you have any thoughts let them run through your head ( if you try to 100% clear your mind you will go nuts on focusing on that task ) and just breath. think of a word, sound, or place that calms you. you can even add candlelight or soothing music.
