A lawyer would be the best adviser as different states
have different laws.

Depends. We send our kids to travel or stay with their grandparents every summer. We always write and have notarized a letter that gives their grandparents temporary guardianship, mostly so they can get medical attention or travel with them. It is just a letter written by us noting the scope of the guardianship, duration, insurance information and contact information.

However, if you want something more, like to have them covered by your mother's insurance, enroll in schools, etc, you might need to consult a lawyer to find out what you need to do.

you can do a notarized letter if there is no objections by any parties. such as the father. if the father objects....then you would have to go to court.
