First you have to find out how many were unsold. Since you know the number sold, subtract that from the total to find out how many were not sold.
To find the percentage, then divide the number unsold by the total, and multiply by 100.

Since he sold 36 out of 84 widgets,
so the number of widgets he didnt sell is 84-36=48
therefore the percentage of widgets he didnt sell is
(48/84)*100=(4/7)*100=(400/7)=57.142857

It is not quite 40.32%... I think you may've divided 36/84 to get your answer. However, the retailer SOLD 36 out of 84 widgets. The number NOT SOLD is 84 - 36, or 48. Now, if you do 48/84, you get the correct answer.

(84-36)/84 = 48/84 = .5714 approximately
To convert the above result to a percentage, simply multiply it by 100 and express it as a percentage, not a decimal.
.5714 x 100 = 57.14%
