so the number of widgets he didnt sell is 84-36=48
therefore the percentage of widgets he didnt sell is
(48/84)*100=(4/7)*100=(400/7)=57.142857

It is not quite 40.32%... I think you may've divided 36/84 to get your answer. However, the retailer SOLD 36 out of 84 widgets. The number NOT SOLD is 84 - 36, or 48. Now, if you do 48/84, you get the correct answer.

(84-36)/84 = 48/84 = .5714 approximately
To convert the above result to a percentage, simply multiply it by 100 and express it as a percentage, not a decimal.
