I am creating an interface for a atm cash machine. Would you find it useful to have a french and german and english language selection to guide you through or is this a waste of time. I thought it was a good idea, now i'm not so sure! Basically there will be a page to select which language you would prefer and then the options would go on from there. Is this just a waste of time, because thinking about it most people using atm cash machines would have a british bank account and would therefore not really need the language options, or do you think it could gain me extra marks for my work! As much help as possible would be greatly appreciated! Thank you..

Personally, I find the ubiquitous initial language query annoying.

What would be best is to make the query once, but actually remember the preference across sessions so that the next time the card is presented for a transaction that the machine doesn't ask and just moves to the correct language.

You would of course need to have some way for the user to change language preferences in case of an error in the initial choice, but this doesn't have to be an initial choice.

I think it's a good idea because it is accommodating travelers who often use ATM's. However at the same time it will be annoying to have to put english everytime. Maybe you could set it up to be default english but have the options on the screen to pick a different language. Would it be possible for the ATM to detect your language according to the language on the card that is inserted into the machine? Either way I like your idea and think that it greatly applies to the growing fast paced world of businessmen and tourists.

We've travelled around the globe and used ATMs in countries that don't have English options. And that's a real pain. Your interface would draw tourists as well as local residents, and I'm sure they would appreciate the language options you have outlined.
If the ATM was for a limited clientele, such as a credit union, then there likely would be no need for language options, but if it is for a bank, then it would be a good idea.

I gather you're using a touchscreen system. Instead of wasting your time with a selection screen, how about
at the top of every page, have these buttons:
In English Auf Deutsch En Francais En Espanol (whatever Italiano)

That way, if the correct language is always being displayed, the user doesn't even have to make a choice, and if it isn't, the complete list is on every page.

my local ATM's have this option and I find it annoying. Having said that I think it might benefit you to incorporate it given that now so many EU countries are allowed in the UK and possibly English is not always their first language.

well it depends on where these atms would be located. If it is somewhere where there is more than one dominate language, then that would be a great idea, but if it is somewhere that one language is for all, then it's probably just a waste of time.

In Canada, I would use French and English. I'm in Oklahoma and would use Spanish and English for this region.
