The two companies will be merging soon. If you buy shares in Lucent today you will actually own shares in the merged company (not just Alcatel) when the deal goes through early next year.

Actually neither company is a great investment. They are both too expensive and making products that are rapidly becoming comodities. Alcatel probably has the better management team, but after the merger the Lucent team will be running the combined company.

If you really want to buy shares in this industry, Cisco or Nokia are a better bet (Nokia has a networks business as well as the mobile phone business). However there are plenty of better investments out there.
