I have been recomended to be a Exchange student to another country by 2 of my spanish teachers. I just looked at the web site and found out that it is EXTREMELY expensive. I would love to go, its such an awsome opportunity. I just want to do the 1 month summer program. I am a HS junior in Ohio. They offer scholorships, but you compete nationally, and the one that is offered for my program doesnt even cover 1/4 of the cost to go. It only gives up to $1475 and i need $5995. I cant depend on that single scholoship alone. Any ideas on what i could do you cover my expenses to be able to go?

Hello Im a New Zealand high school student who is looking to go on an exchange to Italy or Spain Next year! Please feel free to add me on msn if you would like to chat more about exchanges or fundraising. My msn is goldprincess89@hotmail.com!

Why dont you try hosting a MEGA garage sale? Normal garage sales generate a few hundred dollars ... If you explain that you want to go on an exchange then Im sure friends, family, teachers, teams, neighbours will be happy to help. You'll also be helping them get rid of items that they no longer use ;-) Advertise as much as you can! Stick up posters, advertise at the community centre in the local newspaper! Make sure to get your friends to help you man to garage sale as it will proberbly be busy!

You could also try selling boxes of fundraiser chocolates or sweets. Where you get a percentage of the profit in return for sales. Your parents can take boxes to work and you can take boxes to school. At my school people actually look for the students selling chocolate! ;-) So most of the work is done for you..!

There are the normal fundraisers .. e.g car wash, sausage sizzles ect... which you friends can help you with!

A part time job is also worth looking around for. If you walk around town you will proberbly see ALOT of vacany posters as Christmas is nearing ... If you don't want a traditional job there is always tutoring younger students or babysitting. Or.. a combination of babysitting and tutoring?

What are you skills and or talents? You can no doubt use these to your advantage? If you are good at art you could sell paintings? If you are a runner you could get people to sponser you to complete one of those fun run events.

Ask your teachers ect... about fundraising too! Im sure they will have some ideas to help you along the way!

CHRISTMAS IS COMMING! and this is a perfect money making oppurtunity. You could organise a christmas dance in the school hall? You could persuade the school to let you hire the hall free of charge ;-). You could make and sell unique Christmas cards and decorations! Bake special Christmas treats .. the options are endless.

I hope I've helped you! Don't give up on going on an exchange. Im sure you'll find the money somehow! Feel free to msn me!

Good luck!

Well, this is a great opportunity for you. I taught English in China, and many of my students were preparing to come to the US with YFU. However, it is VERY expensive.

But there are alternatives, if you want to be an exchange student for less money. I came to Mexico to learn Spanish before attending medical school here, and my younger brother came with me. The program that we came for is very cheap compared to YFU, and it is a great exchange experience.

My brother is in high school, but this unversity program is designed for any students 16 and older. So that is really great for him, because he got eighteen college credits over six months while in high school.

There are many options available, including studies in business, culture, history and literature if your Spanish level is advanced. The program only costs $350 per month for 3 college credits, and the cost to stay with a host family is an additional $350 per month. There are also all sorts of cultural activities and other things which you can participate in for minimal additional cost. It is really a great option for any sort of exchange student, because you get so much for your money and you can be a student here with any level of spanish ability. The web site is http://www.uag.mx/12/cii.html and you can check it out for yourself. It is at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Guadalajara, MX.
Lots of high school students were here in the summer that I was studying spanish, and I think it could be a great opportunity for you.
If you want to know anything more, email me from my profile page.
Best wishes!
