The Internet has no speed,

the speed of the net at any one time depends on your computer, your network, your isp, the location you are requesting info from, their ISP, their network, their computer, network traffic, packet loss

In an ideal situation the limiting speed would be the speed of light across and the encoding mechanism used

If, everyone got off except for one person it may get very fast. The amount of computers has something to do with the speed. What happens; Think of the game spin the bottle, and each person a computer and the bottle the Internet Server. As the bottle point at you it your turn to connect. This happens very fast, but, the more people circled around the bottle the less connect time and your computer has to wait for its next turn. I not remember, but, I think it called "Multiplexing".
