If you don't care about the speed of your internet, you can probably just hook up through the phone line and use something like Net Zero for $10/month. If you don't have more than one phone line, you will end up tying up your phone, so anyone who calls will get the busy signal.

If you're willing to spend a few extra bucks, you can get DSL for $15/month through AT&T Yahoo!. It isn't the fastest, but it's faster than 56K, and it's pretty cheap.

Cable internet is pretty much the fastest internet connection you can get, but it's more expensive. Usually, companies (such as Comcast) provide promotional deals, but those only last a few months and then you have to pay the regular fees. (Usually around $30+/month.)

Keep in mind that you have to check for providers in your area. Yahoo! and Comcast don't give internet access in some areas.

Welcome to Yahoo Answers.

If you really want to be online from home whenever you want, you just have to look at your options.

1= If you want DSL, you also have to get a regular phone line, which drives up the cost. Phone companies will have specials running most of the time, so check out their website to see what they are offering.

2= Check out the slowest cable based internet. It will still be faster than DSL. They do not require you to have cable TV, but sometimes will also offer bundles. Again, check out their website for their specials.

3= Since you have a laptop, you can also go wireless through your cellular company. The problem here is the long term commitment like a year or two. The benefit is that you can be almost anywhere and have a good high speed connection.

4= Lastly is wi-fi. If you live in an apartment complex, chances are good that you can piggyback off of someone elses connection. I do not endorse this, but a lot of people do. Just dont do them any harm (bite the hand that feeds you). Your new laptop probably has it built in...or you can move next to a starbucks!

You don't have to get DSL go with cable internet (It's faster than DSL or dialup). Contact the cable companies in you area and see what they have for deals. If you already have cable contact your current company and ask them if they offer packages.
