Most Americans don't care about uniting with any other country. The NFL is practically a religion here College Football (American) is a part of the American psyche. I've seen family members not speak to each other due to college footbal rivalries.
I live in the states was born in the states and keep up with all the FIFA cups because i love soccer. Congrats to NE Revolution for going to the MLS championship. Americans are cold to soccer because we don't dominate it and because it's strange and foreign. I took a poll in a southern US newspaper during the cup and found that most of the people didn't like soccer because they found it too slow, low scoring or because they just didn't really know why they didn't like however i found a growing number of people in their 30's liked the sport and a large number of people in their 20's and teens considered themselves soccer fans. So while the older Americans don't like it the younger do plus interest in the sport seems largest in the the western states but at it's smallest in the southeastern states.
There is no "better" sport organization i know people who hate the NFL and FIFA but love NASCAR it's all up to the individual.
But soccer has done something American Football never did. On Christmas in the first year of WW1 oppossing armies played a soccer match so for one day soccer helped stop a war.

NFL for many reasons.
First of all, the NFL is run smoothly. It has a clear deliniation in how power is applied. The commissioner is picked by the owners but operates independently. However, he must negotiate with the players union.
Both owners and players work very well and make more money every year.
The NFL is the richest league in the world when it comes to marketing, television and merchandise.
Even though FIFA is a world body it still has trouble making profits - it makes a lot of revenue but spends money like a drunken sailor. Many of its officers are only in it for themselves by spending money on expensive hotels, dinners, privates jets, etc.
In addition, a different NFL team makes the Super Bowl each year. There is a lot of excitment because each team has a legitimate chance "ON ANY GIVEN SUNDAY".
However, FIFA's World Cup has been dominated by a few countries; Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Italy. There is not much suspense.
FIFA's credibility is suspect. Many referees have been caught in disastrous scandals. A red card is a disastrous penalty so many referees are BRIBED to tip the game in a team's favor.
FIFA enjoys wider audience but the NFL is pound-for-pound the best sports organization in the world (and I'm a baseball fan).

the whole bringing country's together thing is nice, but soccer can not compare to football, it is much more boring (slow). NFL without a doubt is better.

Also, which one has more foot to ball contact during play?
So, which one should be called football?
