Can anyone really defend or advocate the use of punishment methods such as caning in this day and age. But something needs to be done regarding discipline in schools. There's been a power shift towards the students and it's not a good thing. In the old days students respected teachers. Now you're just as likely to get sworn at or assaulted.

I'm not sure what the solution is but there needs to be some deterrent that will make even the nastiest little sh*t think twice before stepping out of line.

Cattle prods anyone?

If you are referring to caning or hitting disobendient students at school, then no, this should not be brought back. However, teachers should not be afraid to use some discipline to keep their classes in line, but the physical well-being of students should never be placed in danger.

If you are talking about walking canes that were so popluar in days of yore, yes, I think that these should be brought back into the gentlemen's wardrobe. I love the derby style canes and such, as they are so dapper! Below are links to my favorite online cane retailers:

NO! - i don't like smacking my own daughter (but do when necessary) but there is no way i would want someone else to do it, especially not with a cane or strap!!!
teachers should be kind and considerate giving a good example of how to behave and treat others, and they should care for the welfare of the children they teach - not attack them in such a way!
i love my child and would not want her to be hit, or humiliated by those who should be encouraging her academic ability (or anyone else for that matter!)

It didn't teach you English. Your phrase, "done no harm to me," is a terrible example, and where is your sentence structure?

Discipline is one thing, but I never allowed my children's teachers to spank my children, even though the school system back then used corporal punishment. HOWEVER::: I told the teachers at the beginning of the school year that if my child did something that they felt required corporal punishment, they were to call me and I would come and administer the spanking myself!

Why did I do that? Because teachers have been known to abuse children in the name of "discipline" and I did not want someone else putting hands on my children. Discipline must be attained, and many parents fight the teachers, insisting that their child is a little angel, in spite of the evidence. So to provide discipline, and protect my children, I aligned myself on the teacher's side.

Of course, I never was called. My children were angels in school and their teachers loved them. But then, my children knew what would happen if they got in trouble.

As for the strap or cane; they are abusive because they can cause serious injury. NO, I do not think that is necessary, nor should it be legal.

When I was a school kid we were given the cane. So we were very
careful not to upset the teacher.
Now students couldn't care less about that, and even attack their Teachers.
There is little discipline now in our schools.
Bring back the cane I say.......

No, I don't believe it's ethical nor nessecary in schools. However, I remember my Dad chasing me around the house with a bamboo cane and it scared the living daylights out of me. He never ever touched me with it and now believe that he never intended to, but it certainly did the trick in getting me to behave!!

Kinky.

There are far better ways of instilling fear into a pupil. Corporal punishment just breeds resentment. I'm totally against it, and I taught for 7 years. A quiet word, one on one, where the pupil thinks you're about to explode at any minute, is far more effective than whacking them on the backside.

Yes, but you aren't going to find a teacher who will use it as they are going to be arrested for child abuse unless it becomes Law. I believe they still use corporal punishment at Public Schools. Probably accounts for the dreadful Government the UK is lumbered with now.

No I don't think they should as it's the parent's duty to discipline their children!

If discipline started in the home and was done in the correct manner then we wouldn't have half the problems in schools as we have now!
