It generally happens with old hard drives or with ones which are not properlly screwed up with the cabinet. As you know the drive rotates at a very high speed and when the read & right head is moving & accessing data from the disc ( platters )

Back it up quickly. This could be a problem with the motor and/or the read/write heads. Retrieving data from a crashed HDD is prohibitively expensive and way more expensive than a new one.

A little noise is normal, especially for an older computer. If it's excessive, try defragging the drive.

And ALWAYS back up your data. Even with a new system.

depends what kinda noise it is.... if its a KERCHUNK noise every so often you will eventually need a HDD. If its just clickclickclick thats the heads clacking on their little stopper thing. My laptop sounds like a kettle when its using the hdd, but there's nothing wrong. Strange electronic devices!

You might just have a noisy fan that gets itself a bit over excited when you're asking your box to do a bit of work. I had that problem once.
