Piano question: I'm getting a keyboard instead of a piano because of space constraints, is 61 keys alright?

All the keyboards i saw had 61 keys. Did you ever see any with 88 keys? What is the differencce between 61 and 88 keys? Does it matter that much?

it depends on how advanced your planing to go with your music. Beginner songs are fine with a keyboard. But there are more advanced songs , after playing maybe 4-5 years that need a fuller range of notes. I have the problem, sometimes the music calls for higher or lower notes that is on my keyboard. But just for learning and practiceing a keyboard is fine.You can certain learn the music on it. I used to pratice on a cardboard with they keys on it. Of coarse i had to learn to hear the sounds in my mind. I did this on the bus, I didn't like to waste my time, just riding. I also would use a toy piano if that was all that was available. My brother does have a keyboard with 88 keys, of course it is not your usual keyboard , it almost looks like a piano, but not as deep as one, but just as wide. It is really nice.

Yes 61 keys if it's an electronic keyboard, but if you're getting a piano, space or not, it's got to be 88 !

I strongly don't recommend the 61 keys, just too many notes missing for many songs. I have a Yamaha 78 key keyboard and it's a good substitute when I can't play a piano. Seriously, try to get at least 78 keys, you'll be much happier.

It matters a little, but what is REALLY important is their ability to play chords. Make SURE you can play at least 8 notes at a time. Preferably, 10.
