I used to try that trick all the time and do you know, I was right, they didn't have to do housework or jobs for their money, because their parents didn't want them to be under their feet all the time, I'm glad my parents made me work for my money because I'm well motivated and I have an excellent job and not afraid of hard work anymore.

It also taught me that money doesn't just come to you willy nilly and that you need to work for it.

Housework has since i was about 10 been part of a house routine, i have a different background to your children, but i was never given pocket money for tidying up and hoovering, it was expected. however i did still try to get away with not doing it by saying friends didn't have to do it, i didn't really know if they did or not, i just didn't want to do it. stick by your guns!!! if need be fire them (make them do the work, and don't give them pocket money!) they'll soon learn!

HAH! They are lucky! I have to do work without getting paid, and I have 7 younger siblings which do absolutely nothing! I'm 17 and I'm the oldest. The other ages are: 16, 11, 10, 8, 6, 5, and 3. None of them hardly help do anything! >:(

Yes, because their parents aren't as responsible as you. What are parents teaching their children by letting them sit around and play video games? They will have no work ethic and will have a hard time keeping a job beyond McDonald's. Giving teenagers chores in order to earn money is great! It teaches them discipline, responsibility and work ethic. Keep up your good work and just remember that teens tend to blow things out of proportion. You're not mistreating them by making them do housework. You're helping their future. Best of luck!

Yep. They will do anything NOT to help around in the house or garden or elsewhere.

My daughter spent a lot of her time on MSN until I had had enough and she is now limited to the amount of time she can spend on it.

The youth of today are totally spoilt.

Me being a mum to one is guilty for letting her off with it.

Sounds like my house, my son has just turned 16 and at the moment he is just like the 'kevin and perry' harry enfield sketches!! Ask his friend when they come round. dont be pressured though, you have your own rules and are bringing your child up by them, i know this is hard but no chores, no money! it wil make him a better person in the end and that is the main thing!

DONT FALL FOR THAT ONE!!!! You are your person and you set your own rules if they dont like it let them go and stay at there friends place you soon will see a change, take charge of what you stand by and dont let your kids try small tricks like that, it is for the only good when they get older..

no , not after the one visited and mentioned all his chores. mine decided that life is not that hard after his most welcome visit.
when yours has their friends over , you should ask them ,hopefully they are not sharp enough to lie to help yours out.
for a laugh I took a book out the library called " Grow Up! the 101 essential things every child should know before leaving home".I never read the whole thing, but my 12 year old has now decided to do her own ironing. i think she likes the idea of successfully being able to cope asap , as an adult not living with her parents.

Absolutely! Don't give in, they'll thank you for it later. As cheesy as that sounds, it's SO true. If you make them work for cash, they'll value money more, and if you don't let them play video games all the time, they'll have a lot more time for school work! Whatever they say now, they'll appreciate it later.
