Some torches (or flashlights, as are called in the states) have a screw top or a screw bottom. Unscrew the top or the bottom. Take out the batteries, but don't throw them away yet. The flashlight's mechanism -- bulb or metal parts -- could be faulty. You could be disposing of perfectly good batteries. Check to see if the batteries are facing in the right direction or are aligned properly. Correct any fault. If it still doesn't work, try the new batteries. The tops are often facing toward the bulb portion of the torch. If that doesn't work, there may be something wrong with the flashlight. In that case. save the old batteries and return the new batteries to storage. All that's left is to play around with the mechanism. A tiny piece of sheet metal is sometimes used to keep the batteries in place, instead of a spring. If so, bend the metal so that it hold the batteires in place with more force.

Open torch cover where batteries are
remove old batteries
Insert an equal number of batteries in it (watch for their polarities :D)
Close the torch lid

There is usually some +/- markings on the torch and batteries. Technical I know but, put the flat end against the springs.
