Ok he is obviously a dictator and has blatantly done some awful things, I just have an issue with some members of the british government. How can they be so positive about the death sentence given to this man and even agree with it in prepared statements to the media when they let murderers and rapists go free every day in Britain. Its a daft question but its been on my mind all day.

You might be surprised to learn that the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, the highest court in the Commonwealth which is still used by a few small ex-colonies, has actually upheld the death penalty's use in sentences in those countries. So there is some residual support for the death penalty even at the highest levels of the British government.

Tony Blair has already said he opposes the death penalty.

I think his view is shared by many. Its the Americans who really wanted Saddam executed.

Iraq has the Death Penalty and Britain doesn't. Thats why they are in favour of Saddam being hung - its under Iraqi law, not British.

For the record I don't think he should be hung - he'll just end up being a martyr. But its up to the Iraqis to decide what to do with him.

True, the government let murderers and rapists go free every day in Britain. They are very weary of sentencing people to capital punishment because there are cases where years down the line people are proven innocent and they don't want to take the risk but Sad Man Insane (as I call him) is so obviously guilty of taking the lives of thousands (recently) and committing evil murderous acts previously that there is no doubt whatsoever! And of course, hanging him lessens the threat to our own nation (even though there are still lots of mad fascist freaks posing a risk to us all)

Weight of evidence I suppose; there's no doubt he was responsible for the death of thousands. Its not a daft question though...I wonder how many of the civilians that have been killed since the invasion would still be alive if we had left Saddam alone ?

Not daft. It's a very reasonable question. UK does not have a death penalty & sometimes gets rather testy with us because we do. Those who oppose the death penalty in their own country & support it elsewhere are hypocrits. I support the death penalty here & for Saddam.

Saddam is front page news; therefore, it suits their political purposes to jump on that bandwagon. It covers up their own hypocrisy. Same thing goes on here in America. The British and the Americans compliment one another nicely, which is why we are not attacking one another.

its a debate we have all been saying since they abolished the death penalty back in the 1960's!

Our prisons are full now so I'm sure more rapists and murders will be on our streets very soon!
