Often there are bets, like each owner gives an amount of money at the beginning of the season and the winner gets it all or split up between top places. You can also bet on highest stats per week. Like if the stat for the week is TD's, you can win an amount if a player on your team has the most. But there are also several "free" leagues as well.

I play for free on YAHOO! - therefore, I don't pay or get paid for winning. There are many places where you can play for money. It's not really betting. You pay up front and the winner gets the money I guess.
You "draft" a team - and you get points for their stats. There are so many variations it's hard to write in here. I'd suggest if you are interested - try at YAHOO! - get the idea for free and then decide about the pay fantasy leagues. IT's probably too late to join this year.
