Yes, and no. F1 is supposed to be the pinnacle of motor racing and technology. And to achieve this, there are going to have to be some environmental problems.
But saying that, the FIA have stated this year that they want to make F1 more "green"...
"Max Mosley has predicted a move towards a more environmentally-friendly Formula One in future, as the sport finds itself compelled to adapt in the face of opposition to its wasteful ways.
Addressing the media on the opening day of the British Grand Prix, the FIA president said that he expected the flagship category to adopt a greener outlook, and that he would be aiming to force through several energy-saving initiatives during his latest spell at the head of the governing body, including a new 'fuel-efficient' engine and a system to use braking energy to provide extra horsepower.
"What we wish to do - and, at the moment, it is only an idea rather than a regulation - is to bring into Formula One a technology that two teams were working on in the mid-1990s, but which we prohibited at the time on the grounds of costs and safety, primarily safety," Mosley said, "That was an energy storage device and, at that time, one team was working on, I believe, a hydraulic system and another on an inertia system."

Formula One has little to do with the precarious state of our planet; the mass destruction of the rain forest system causes far more damage to the planet; let's start by saving the rain forests.

Just a comparison to make you see that it shouldn't:
Adding the pollution caused by a race from each motorsport series, you get a lower quantity of pollutants than a Jumbo Jet crossing the Atlantic once.
And F1 is probably going a bit greener. If Max Mosley remains at the FIA, which is highly unlikely. Everyone hates him now.
But anyway, energy recycling devices are on their way in F1.

Formula one should be used as a proving ground for lean burn engines, green fuels, energy reclaimation systems, and renewable sources, imagine if they were limited to a set amount of fuel per race and each year they would get less fuel, the top minds of the automotive industry would soon make an efficent car fast, this in turn will filter down to road cars.

You know, you may be right. So while we are at it we should make sure that there is no polution at all. Why don't we stop everybody from ever starting a fire, since fires produce pollution. Oh yeah and Cars, produce tons of pollution, lets stop driving and just walk everywhere. Cows produce Methane gas whenever they pass gas, that has got to be real harmful to the enviroment,. so lets outlaw cows, just kill them all. Who needs, milk, leather or beef anyway. Oh yeah and all of us billions of people who are intuding on mother earth (how rude of us) evertime we breath out we must produce some kind of polution, we should just outlaw breathing.
You should start the movement. on the count of the three, don't ever breath out again, Ready, 1....2....3.....
There really are much more important things to things to worry about, like the sate of families in America, or restoring peace to the world, or why did Katie Holmes marry Tom Cruise anyway?

No, for one reason the technology used in formula one racing eventually filters down to car munufacturers helping them devolop safer and more economical / aerodynamic models.
Another reason is i'd have nothing to watch when the bike racing is not on.

I don't see why you would think it should? because of fuel consumption? all the f1 races in a year would use less then one one-hundredth of a percentage of all the fuel used in north America each year.
