My wife and I spent our honeymoon in CR and toured the whole country from San Jose to Guanacaste Province. We were amazed at the friendliness of the people, intelligence and gov'ts committment to educating the people and bringing prosperity.

With the election of Ortega to the north, the history of Ortega's bullying of Costa Rica and the lack of a military to protect it is Costa Rica in danger of losing all the progress it has made for it's people?

Will this lead to a military with teeth backed by the U.S.?

Bottom line is we were touched by the beauty of the coutnry and the people and are afraid for it's future.

The people of Nicaragua are very warm and friendly. I am partial because I am Nicaraguan. Nicaragua does not posses the military capability that it did back in the 80's so it won't be a threat to any of the neighboring countries. Panama once said that they will come to the aid of Costa Rica if anything was to happen. The winning of Ortega might be a problem only if the investors leave the country which many have already threathened to do i.e., Taiwan, Spain, Sweden, US and a slew of private businesses and also future investors who were waiting to see how the election would end. Ortega promised jobs to the poor and that is the only reason why he got voted in. If the investors leave and they aren't replaced by new ones, what sort of jobs will there be? Especially if the US pulls out which that will cause irreparable damages to the country's infrastructure and will leave the poorer even poorer. Not to forget that also Daniel left the country in shambles and heavy debt of 1,200 billion dollars when he left office in 1990. Thus far, the country stands divided.

Orgeta is a thug from the past just hoping he learned his lesson about the economic mismanagment of the 1980s. Personally, Ortega shoud not be in power he had no respect for the rule of law. Costa Rica is a peacefull small nation that is suffer the brunt if Ortega goes Shizohernic on his people. I hope he moderated somwhat from the 1980s when he led Sandisnistas with is form of economic planning runs on mix plutoracy, populism, marixsm, and Feel sorry for Costa Rica having a thug north of you in Nicarauga like Ortega. Sadly, Ortega should be in prison for human rights abuses committed during the 1980s as is right-wing ruler that was not much better. I dont know how Ortega got immunity but he should not gotten immunity for his crimes. Just hope Orgeta like i said, I hope Ortega acts with restraint Costa Rica doesnt deserve the fallout effect from a curropt goverment to the north.

i really dint know what you mean by Ortega bullying Costa Rica... I'm sure it will have some effect but it won't be major. if he is bullying them as you say its stupid because lots of nicoyas go to Costa Rica to work...and I'm sure the us will back Costa Rica especially against Ortega they already did it once in 1979...and they'll do it again...which will only make matters worst for Nicaragua
