other sell peoples violate a decision to be on the Do Not Call Registry? How do you report these violations? This manner of solicitation seems like a clever work around the registry to me.

Addendum from the FTC: Political organizations, charities, survey companies and businesses with whom a consumer has a pre-existing relationship with are exempt from do not call compliance, although they still have to comply with some rules. Once the customer’s registration takes effect about three months after they apply, organizations can call to ask you to take a survey or make a donation, but can’t attempt to sell you anything. In the case of a pre-existing relationship, a company can call you for up to 18 months after a purchase, delivery or payment, although do not call compliance applies if you ask them not to call again.

As far as I am concerned, I did not call the politician or party and ask them to contact me. I do not consider my role as a voter as a pre-existing relationship.

Addendum 2: Tape recordings don't take phone messages or say how to contact them.

No, the politicians left themselves out of the legislation of course! They also allowed for 'polls' so that they could get information about how you are going to vote. This created a loophole for market research firms - they can also call you whether you want them to or not, as long as they don't try to sell you anything, but are only running a 'survey'. Once more our politicians prove themselves to be total slimeballs.

Political calls are exempt from the prohibitions of the Do Not Call act. Just don't answer the phone for the next 24 hours unless you recognize the caller ID.

My understanding is that the do not call list does not apply to charities at all...not sure about political organizations.

But whether you are on the list or not, if you specifically ask the organization not to call you, they are not allowed to call again...provided that you know who they are. You have to stay on long enough to find out who it is who is calling before saying "Don't call again" and slamming down the phone, otherwise it's not enforcable.

Also, if they call for your husband or someone else in the household, you can not decline their calls for that person. That person has to get on the phone and say "don't call" themselves.
