Someone once told me to never sniff a gift fish--what do you think they meant?

I would think that it would be like the saying "don't ever look a gift horse in the mouth". Which in simple terms means take the gift for what it is and appreciate it instead of inspecting it to see if it's good enough. But you can always read the book by the same name and I'm sure you could figure it out.
