Both fantastic cars but you pay way over the odds for a really good Golf. As a Lexus driver I would put my money on the Jap cars everytime. The Civic is fantastic in every engine size and style. If you are thinking of buying a car of this type have you checked out the Focus? It is the best in this class and beats the stupid BMW1 hands down too!

you know both VW and Honda are great cars!

It depends on which model you were thinking of buying. The Honda Civic Type R is an excellent car. A bit revvy but goes like stink when you need it too. The VW is a heavier car but if you were going for a GTI or R32 then you might have to ponder a bit harder as these two models are proabably faster. Honda bare in mind do have the VTEc which makes it quite economical around town! There are equal numbers of tuners out there who can help you out if need. but inherently Honda reliability is second to none. While VW seem to always scrimp on the smallest things and end up with huge bills!

I've had both a Type R and R32 and I personally who go for the Honda each time!. Remember that saying if it doesn't work then its just a metal box on wheels!

Good luck!

I have always been a big German car fan but in buying my first car here in the U.S. I made a surprising choice of choosing the '06 Honda Civic over all other competitors in its class (VW Golf incuded). I like the quality of materials used in the interior of the Civic as well as the company's ergonomic approach to interior space. The engine is delightfully peppy and very frugal on gas. I opted for the LX model and got all the essental equipment I need for my daily commute to work and fun drives on weekends. Styling is a bit techno-modern for some people's taste but it suits me just fine. Overall, I'm impressed with the new generation Hondas. The Civic is definitely a keeper.

Well I was very 'anti' Japanese cars until I inherited a Honda Civic (old version) and I found it to be fantastic. The New Honda VTEC engine has been described by Jeremy Clarkson as the best engine in the world. I would agree.

Yes VW has a good reputation and I have owed them also for many years - but now, for me - go for the new Civic. Enjoy.

I bot the '06 Civic. I compared it to the Jetta and went with the Honda due to price, reported reliability and resale values. The Golf is a hatchback and the Civic is a sedan. If you like space to carry stuff, the Golf is better.

The Honda diesel is an excellant piece of engineering as is the golfing. for my area i might % the Honda over the golfing based on the extra present day asthetics. The honda diesel is air purifier and quicker. The golfing indoors is particularly extra inexpensive looking.

I would go for a Honda Civic, you can't beat japanese reliabilty, better resale value and looks nicer imo. The Type R also goes faster than most Mercs, BMW M3's in fact most german cars as they are restricted to 155mph. I was told that the new Type R will be the same price as the old one, about £17000, I would hold off till january and purchase one of those.

well golfs suck in automatic, those germans could never get it right, other than that they're very reliable. the honda civic gets better gas mileage. unless you get the golf tdi (diesel) that gets like 3 times the amount of mileage than the civic, but you may have trouble starting it in winter, i dont know how cold, if it all, your winters get. besides that i would call insurance comapre quotes, and see whats more affordable for you. also if they come out to being the same price, more or less, just choose which suits you best. or which you like best (personally i like the vw, damn nice!)

Civic is highly rated in JD Powers and Consumer Reports surveys. In contrast, VW does not do well at all. This is a no-brainer. Get the Civic.
