What about the effects of computerization on graphic design? Some of the most famous graphic designers and how ther work reflected their times? The different styles of graphic designs? The relationship between design styles and social trends (60s mod & free love, etc)? The difference between graphic design and fine art and how they overlap?
Those are just the ones that I can think of off the top of my head, you should be able to figure out something from there.

It's still a bit historical, but it might be interesting to analyse the changes in graphic design that came with the widespread use of computer graphics in the 1980s

Try writing a paper on a specific graphic artist- Alphonse Mucha, Neville Brody, or even Andy Warhol. I once wrote a paper on David Carson that I thoroughly enjoyed.

do not do the history that is so boring
Do research on the best graphics and companies that are out there. Write an informative paper that will also help you in the long run. Which jobs in your area hire for this work and such.
Good luck

You should find a medium that you find appealing: such as:
record covers
typography
Tea boxes
film advertising
carrier bags...
and see where that takes you.
