Many people travel to France and there is this prejudice that if you don´t speak french or even not really good they wont help you. I mean they should be happy about the many people, who are intrested in their country!

ok im sure there were some who had a good experience with france but i didnt i really tried to talk french but they just told me that it is pronounced like this and not the way i did and they just walked away. ok maybe i just didnt met the nice people on my trip but i just got curious since this stereotype of french people exist and i was in many other foreign places where i made different experience and they werent rude when i couldnt speak their language and they even thought it was cute when i tried to talk in their language. so i dont know there are surely some who had a nice experience with france and admittedly it s a beatiful place especially paris.

Actually french people in France are a lot more tolerant of those who are not french speaking. Go to Quebec, Canada. Then you'll see REAL prejudice from the french as they think they are superior to those even in France.

I went to France a few years ago, and I met a wonderful French woman on the plane going over. My husband worked for the airline, and she worked for another airline. She gave me her phone number and offered to be my guide- so I called her while there, and we had a wonderful day together.

But most of the time my husband was working, I just took out on my own. Not knowing much of the language did not intimidate me, and seemed okay with most of the people I ran into- they could see I tried. I stayed away from touristy restaurant areas, and I found that most people were very helpful, and nice. Paris is a big city, and I'm not a small town girl- so I just expected people to be people.

A lot has to do with the attitude of the traveler- I cannot emphasize that enough.

There were some American tourists I shared a shuttle with from my hotel that I could not relate to. In my opinion, they should have stayed home- all they had to say were bad things about everything. My feeling is that some people feel insecure when they can't understand the language, but instead of trying to remedy that problem by learning, they just project their frustration outwardly and make it everyone else's fault. Let's face it, to travel to a foreign country is a rare privelege that very many people never have the opportunity to do. Why would anyone ruin it by complaining?

I can't wait to go back to France. After all, haven't more people been rude to you in your own home state than in France? That has been my experience! Be a gracious guest, look for the best in people, and you will enjoy what the world has to offer!

This is such a myth! We went to Paris a few years ago and were dreading the arrogance, lack of help, lack of English etc etc that we'd heard about. We found them to be so helpful and generous and English speaking! PHEW! I would love to go again and see more of the place.

There is a woman that lives in my town and she is French. She is rude and is always talking about how much she hates Americans. That's fine but she has lived here more than 20 years and has her own shop. I feel America has been good to her, being that she lives in a big house and drives a Range Rover and none of that would be possable if americans did't shop at her store.

I think if you are going to visit a country that has a language other than your own you should make an effort to learn. It is respectful to the native people of that country.
