I've made several fountains. You need a container that is water tight. If you are making a pond, you will need a hole dug that is lined with a heavy mil plastic that is available at home improvement stores. You will need rocks to secure the plastic around the outside of the hole. For either, you will need a pump that can circulate the number of gallons that your container or pond can hold. Then you will need a pipe that attaches to the pump in the length or height that you desire. Fill the container with rock in order to use less water and to disguise the pipe and electric cord that will plug into your power supply. At the top of the pipe you will need a spray head. There are several types to choose from. I prefer the unbrella shaped sprayers because I can better control splash and don't have to fill the basin as often. I only run my fountains on electric because I have not found any systems that operate stickly on solar power. But, since in my area it only costs about 1-3 cents an hour (depending on the size of the pump) to run my fountains, it hasn't been a major concern in terms of energy usage.

There is a great book at the Lowes by Sunset called simply, Fountains and Ponds that has great step by step instructions, photos and several creative ideas for making them.

Use a black plastic liner and pump system (electric) that you can buy at any home improvement outlet or online provider. They come in many different shapes and sizes. you can also use natural stones and boulders to line the coping of the pond and use plenty of landscape to give a natural setting.
