New England is the Northeast region of the United States. It includes Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. Then there's the Carolina Panthers, which could represent both of the Carolina states. You could also make an argument that either the New York Jets or the New York Giants represent the state of New York.
However, most teams are noted for the cities they are in, like the Seattle Seahawks, Miami Dolphins or the Kansas City Cheifs just to name a few.
If the team is the only team in the state, then it just might actually represent the state by virtue of being the only team in that state.
Does this help?

Most NFL teams are named after a city, not a state.

Some teams represent states like the Minnesota Vikings. That is because Minnesota is dominated by the Twin Cities, Minneapolis and St. Paul, so the football team couldn't be named after just one of the cities.

Other teams representing states include the Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans.

Some teams represent a region, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carolina Panthers and the New England Patriots.

New England is a strongly identified region. It is made up of six states and people from there really consider themselves New Englanders.

no infact most NFL teams represent a city the major exceptions being the above mentioned patriots and the Carolina Panthers (seeing as how it only is Carolina and doesn't specify which one) The reason a team would represent an area like that is so they can appeal to a larger fan base. The Patriots at one time were the Boston Patriots, but since New England consists of a larger region they can appeal to a larger area.

Very odd that there is a football team there. Here is a fact:

New England is a region of the United States located in the northeastern corner of the country. It comprises the states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The region's most populous city, as well as its business and cultural center, is Boston.[1]

The region was inhabited by indigenous peoples when English Pilgrims, fleeing religious persecution in Europe, arrived nearly four hundred years ago, at the beginning of the 17th century. In the 18th century, New England was one of the first North American British colonies to demonstrate ambitions of independence from the British Crown, although it would later oppose the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain.

The New England Patriots, or "Pats" as frequently referred to by sports writers and fans.[1] are a professional American football team based in Foxboro, Massachusetts. They are currently members of the Eastern Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). Originally called the Boston Patriots, the ownership changed the name after relocating the team to Foxborough in 1971.

New England is the name for the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. When the Patriots moved out of Boston to Foxboro, they decided to adopt a name that would draw from the entire region. Successfully.

The Steelers D will present problems for the Pats. Its all about getting physical with them and hammering Brady. Maybe Kimo Von Olhoffen can work his magic again. The Pats aren't going to put up big points against the Steelers like they have against some of these lesser opponents. If Big Ben plays mistake free we can do this. Run the ball, tough, physical D, no special teams mistakes, and a few good bounces its all Steelers Bruce Airiens needs to get his game plan straight though. Why would the Steelers come at the Broncos passing and not running? Their D was worst in the NFL against the run and the best against the pass. I feel like he needs to be run out of town tonight. The Colts can beat the Pats too. They can score with anyone.

No, NFL teams like all pro teams can represent a city, a state or an entire region, given that they only practice / play in one given area. New England is a region.

New England is a region comprised of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine, Connecticut and Rhode Island. The central hub of this area is Boston, MA and this is where the Patriots play

having the name "new england" gives the people of VT,NH,ME,RI, and CT the feeling that the Patriots are "their" team. those states i mentioned will never have a professional football team, although they did have teams in the early 20th century (Providence Steam Rollers). other examples are the Carolina Pathers, Tennessee Titans, Minnesota Vikings, and the Arizona Cardinals. all these areas will probably only finance and service one professional team.
