They have staff consisting of many people whose sole job is to educate themselves on the issues and condense those and inform the politician. Few if any of them do research on their own, or bother to look deeper. But the fact that some "research" has been done makes them think their fact/s and/or opinion/s correct.

Well, then who will?

Many politicians ARE actually very smart and know a lot about leading, that is the point, we need leaders in our society, who will be your representative?..someone who says:' well, dah, um, I don't know, that's just what I heard, I'm kinda stupid and slow, oh yeah, I must be wrong".
A strong leader has to look in charge at all times.

Because they are people with huge egos (or crushed egos who are compensating) who are attracted to the public stage. Politicians are seeking office to stroke their fragile egos, demonstrate that they have some value, exercising their desire to be powerful.

They are like police officers, may have inferiority complexes and they are compensating for a feeling of powerlessness by seeking powerful positions. I posit that those attracted to either police work or political office are the ones who should not hold those positions!
