My fiance' told me first and I had to tell her that although I liked her, my feelings for her were not there at love yet and to give me more time. She did, and we've been happily married for 16 years.

Love is love - it is not a competition! It doesn't matter who says it first, last whatever - just as long as it is said from the heart and it is truly and really how you feel about the person.

Not to burst your balloon, don't expect a similar response - you my get it - all well and good!. Just because you say you love someone, it does not mean they love you back or that can say that they love you at the same time that you come to that conclusion.

I noticed your question disappearing quite quickly.. Perhaps you have a stalker who doesn't hear "i love you" often enough? In my relationship I really don't know who said it first, as we both found it quite crass at first. So we both said it in context of yuck. When I said it in earnest I said it in Dutch, so I had to say it first so she could pronounce it too. I think it's excellent that I can't answer who said it first - perhaps it's best if boy and girl say it at roughly the same time. And neither boy nor girl answers 'dito' ;o)

Since society still stereotypes women as always being more emotionally attached, I refuse to say it first. My boyfriend said it first, although I had to wait nine months, and until he had to write me a letter from boot camp to express his love. I'm very stubborn - I'm not gonna be that girl who has to beg a guy to commit, love her, care about what she likes, etc. If you don't want me enough to want to do that, you aren't the kind of guy I want anyway.

I think it's better when the guy says I love you first. Guys don't use the word "love" as freely as girls do. It means more to hear a guy say "I love you".

I don't think it matters. If the person feels it, they should say it. I told my husband first and we have been happily together now for 11 years.

I believe when both of the parties have a mutual agreement, it shouldn't matter who says it first.

As long as the person saying it means it, I don't think it matters.
