I am in my first job out of college. I sell copiers and printers at an office technology company. I get a base of 24,000 a year and I sell to the church/school market. It is hard to set my gross profit high becuase they are churches/schools. It is almost impossible to reach my monthly quota of gross profit and a good commisiion check will be $700 but its hard to sell more than even one machine every two months. I know they like me at the company but I think that other companies that have reps in this market give them a much higher base becuase they know that there is little gross profit in this market. I am guessing other companies have a different compensation structure.

What was your degree in? Why are you working in sales? I did that in college. I know probably the first job that came around, but you should be looking for other opportunities any ways in your field, assuming that you are not in your field. Good luck I just graduated in May and started my first job two weeks ago i know it is hard out there

Dan, you may be being paid too much. How long is a company going to pay you $24,000 /year, if you sell 1 copier every 2 months...that's 6 per year or they need $4,000 net profit from each of these copiers just to pay your base salary.

Commision sales is very difficult when starting out, until you get a lot more experience and a large past customer base, built by sales and good customer after sales service, you will find working life not fun.

What did you take in college? did you graduate? Can't you do anything more interesting??

One answer to your question:

Can you get paid more elsewhere? Meaning do you have the skills and abilities needed to get an available job paying more? If yes, then you are getting less than you can demand elsewhere.

If you stay at the current job, I would say from employer's perspective, you are getting paid enough.

it really depends where you live but you could probably make more elsewhere if there are other sales jobs available- you should look into other jobs while keeping this one- you need a good reference for your first job so if you quit give them 2 weeks notice and thank them for the opportunity.
