For the most part such bragging is a defense mechanism used by the person. I have never met anyone who dropped out of school and was proud enough about it to brag. That cannot be normal behavior, but a defense to protect the ego.

Chow!!

If this person is on his or her deathbed why would you even need to react to it? Death is not the time to make someone feel quilty about his or her decisions in life. I do not think that dropping out of high school or not getting a GED is a good idea for today's times. But if the person is older then it wasn't uncommon for people of past generations to have to join the workforce at an early age just to survive. There are many successfull businessmen and women who did not complete high school. For example Dave, the founder of Wendy's, didn't get his GED until he was older and that was just because he knew people looked up to him and he wanted to set an example- not bc he needed it.

The moral of this is to respect and to be supportive of people who have made decisions that they are proud of- even if you wouldn't make the same decision.

I would say "Congratulations. You made the right choice for yourself."

Seriously though....as sad as I become when I hear about a child who has dropped out, I also realize that school is not the place for some kids. Even though we push the "anybody can go to college" line, it's not the truth. We need to find alternative education programs for many kids. I think every high school should have some kind of vocational or intern program for each student. That way students who are "academically challenged" can actually use their skills in a hands on job environment.
Am I saying that we should just cut kids loose that don't want to learn? Absolutely not, but maybe education can become a little more relavent to them with some job training instead of the "Cantebury Tales."

have a nice day.

I have known some pretty sucessful people in life that never made it passed their freashman year in highschool and never got a degree. These success stories don't happen that often, but heh if someone is on their deathbed and don't have any regrets in life than great. Let them rest in peace. We are not here to judge. If someone wants to brag about something they did or didn't do let them brag away and you knod and smile and move on. No sense losing sleep or being upset by these kid of people. It takes all kinds to make up our world. It doesn't take an higher education for people to be happy.

I'd be glad that they knew themselves well enough to make the decisions that made them happy. Success is defined differently for different people. Graduating High School or getting a GED are not the most important things a person can do with their life.

If on their death bed they don't regret that decision, they must have managed through life. It is not the time to preach about high school then.

But a young kid, I'd ramble about what it takes to earn a living in the real world.

Most of these people generally point to others who have succeeded after doing something similar, but yet have I met one of these people who brag about all of the people in a similar situation who populate prisons, street corners and morgues.

Works for me - most hollywood stars that did make it through high school just did little and most did not do it or graduate and they are r-i-c-h and we are poor and they do not regret it and they will lord it over us so we don't have an opinion.
